Harvest Moon and Blue Moon

Originally posted 10-1-2020

Last night, October 1st, was the Harvest Moon. The first full moon after the fall equinox. You should still be able to see it mostly full again tonight. Go outside and look. The next full moon occurs on October 31st, Halloween night. This means we have one month in which two full moons occur, this second occurring full moon is referred to a Blue Moon. I.e. “once in a Blue Moon.”

Depending on how your Athas moon phases and calendars are set up, you might not have Blue Moons. The Merchant Calendar program treats Ral’s phases as 33 days and Guthay’s as 125 days. (Earth’s moon is 29.5 days.) The Athasian calendar used in the program only has 30 days at most for a month, so a second full moon of that same moon cannot occur in a single month. But there will be instances that both moons can be full. So there.
